WuzLovesDubs - Best advice ever!

ok. the good news is that my wife has eased up on the whole "talking it out with the elders" thing.
she now insists that she is doing her"own independent research with unbiased materials" on some subjects.
unbiased?

since 1935, the watchtower had been categorically teaching (for over 6 decades) that the heavenly calling of the 144,000 anointed christians had ceased in 1935. this teaching was especially significant to older jws (especially those who spent much of their lives serving the watchtower as pioneers, elders, missionaries, bethelites, etc.
) because many of these would eventually turn their attention to the aging governing body members and feel a sense of relief knowing that the end was drawing ever so near.
in other words, as more governing body members (who were born before 1935) passed away, the closer they would get to their long-awaited reward of surviving armageddon and living on paradise earth where they would finally hug grass-eating lions near a waterfall while marveling at snow-peaked mountains in the distance.
These heavenly gates appear to be of the swinging variety, closing in 1935, re-opening in 2007; very possibly slamming shut again any day now - stay tuned!

OK - I'm probably in the minority here - only you know how much you really do or do not want to go to this guy's place for dinner.
When we were fading, we still got invites from some of the 'uber' dubs, but these seemed to be the only ones who truly cared about us. I know that doesn't say much for the rest of our 'acquaintances' from the hall; out of sight, out of mind. But, because we really enjoyed being with the ones who had invited us and loved them for who they were, witness or not, we could put up with their probing questions as to why we were lagging in attendance, not doing the weekly service thingy, etc. These people really were trying to help us (in their own way!) and at least putting their money where their mouth was. We were circumspect in our answers, not raising too bright a flag but all the while hoping to plant minute seeds that might germinate sometime further down the road. Of course, in time, the invites died out...
Do whatever you feel comfortable with.
Edited to add: I just reread you OP and it doesn't sound like he is one of your favourites...left an offensive message; sorry, probably better not to go.
before my mother became a jehovah's witness i remember.
the fun of christmas and opening the beautifully wrapped.
gifts under the christmas tree.
I beleive that ignoring holidays and birthdays etc. also hides/masks the passage of time from the JW rank and file. When people put significant planning into a special event day (like a birthday), it further punctuates that arrival of that day and makes the passage of time more apparent.
The Witnesses are encouraged to live each day the same as the last -- this disconnects them from the passage of time and further hides the errors and changes of the JW teachings.
As a kid we has regular family celebrations until I was 5 or 6. Then my parents got the "Truth".. We no longer spent any time with my grandparents or extended relatives on holidays etc.
Really agree with you here, darth. No one day stands out as memorable, every day is more of the same and it almost makes life seem circular, measuring the weeks by the days that have meetings and the days that don't - what a hell of a way to live.
Now that we're out, we celebrate just about everything! We can look back on our birthdays and remember what we did THAT DAY because it was something SPECIAL. And it does mark the passage of time. It makes life so much more exciting - all the planning and preparations - which reminds me - time to make the fruitcake now so it really moistens up for Xmas!
I've always been a big gift giver, especially to my children. But seeing that we don't really NEED much in a material way these days, we're looking into gifting a goat or some other animal to a family in another area of the world where this will mean the difference between life/death and eating/not eating. That represents the SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS, even without the gift-giving, that Witnesses completely miss out on, especially those that have never experienced it (born ins). I, at least, had 8 or 9 before the holiday-devoid Witness life kicked in, so I am enjoying rekindling those memories. It's not just about the gifts, but the warmth of family and friends, caring for the less fortunate and the specialness of that particular day. And I look forward to it all year - only 61 days and counting!
Oh, and one more thing - in the Witness world there is NEVER A HOLIDAY. If it's a 'worldly' holiday, that's no excuse for not witnessing - all the more reason to go out and knock on doors to get those who are finally home...you would be expected to do MORE even though you were supposed to be enjoying a day off. I think the Witness mentality is actually one of "we don't need holidays". Again, what a way to live. Terrible.
stomach problems?.
okay i know it sounds cheezy.
but hopefully those of you who suffer these digestive problems won't just rely on your doctor's advice.
If it's heartburn you want to get rid of, this has been a MIRACLE for me: I can't recommend this stuff enough.

From their website:
And hydrogen carbonate provides for a balanced acid-base balance and protects against hyperacidity and heartburn.
I know it works for me. Not sure what the implications are for colitis...

since leaving all organized religion, all superstition, all acceptance of deity, i have a terrible time truly understanding 'religious' thought.. i really do.. how is it possible for thinking people to just accept, without proof, all they accept?
this morning i overheard a conversation between two christians in a coffee shop.
they say to me 'dad, what's wrong with just being a nice, good person?
Tammy - agreed - that's why I like the analogy of a veil - passing thru, rather than passing...

Tammy - Amen.
Only thing I would add, in my case, is that I am afraid of death - moreso for those left behind than for myself. But my child is a living part of me once I am gone in any event.

PSac:
energy returns to the universe
I don't really think that's the WT's stance. I thought they believe the body is DEAD, totally DEAD as a doornail (if even that is dead?!)
What I think they really miss is what Jesus himself said as he expired which was "Into your hands I entrust my spirit" - will have to find the exact verse - Luke 23:46; Stephen said the exact same thing as he was being stoned - Acts 7:59. In today's parlance, that probably means the universe...
